Our trip to West Palm Beach for our Bahamas cruise and Fort Lauderdale took us off the grid for a few days but we are back in Orlando and ready for more Disney and Legoland before heading back to the bitter cold and snow that home appears to have in store for us. Luckily, it has been blue skies, sunshine and warm weather for us for the most part.
On Friday, Robert, the kids and I headed to West Palm Beach to board the Bahamas Celebration for a two-night cruise to Freeport, Bahamas. The drive and the check-in process were relatively uneventful. Some sort of "technical difficulty" postponed our departure until sometime after we all went to bed; Duncan woke up worried that the ship never moved but we woke up in the Bahamas so we obviously sailed eventually. It must have sucked for all the people waiting to gamble, though, as the casino was closed until the ship is 2-3 miles off-shore. The children enjoyed spending time at Club Coconuts (the kids-care centre) while Robert and I enjoyed the relaxation and down-time. The kids pool had a great slide that Duncan loved, challenging himself to race up and down the slide faster and faster each time. Unfortunately, it was just a wading pool/splash pad so was not overly exciting for Robert and I. While we were docked in the Bahamas, we visited the adult pool with the kids but when the bachelorette and wedding parties were on-board, it did not strike us as an appropriate place for us to be hanging out with the kids; I was certainly not interested in answering the questions that would be sure to arise from such exposure...
Oh, and this was where I was horrified to see the super high-waisted, acid-washed short shorts (we're talking waistband at the ribcage with your butt-cheeks hanging out the bottom) on nearly every college-aged girl we saw. Some fashions should never be recycled!
Sunday morning, we disembarked and drove onto Fort Lauderdale. Our hotel was certainly nothing to write home about and it claimed to have wi-fi but neither of us were able to find a signal lasting more than 20 seconds. The pool area was nice except there were more people smoking than swimming. We also found ourselves unable to enjoy the hottub as upon entering, Danica informed Robert that she needed the bathroom. As they climbed out and he informed me, she replied, out loud in front of multiple people, "it's okay, Daddy, I already peed.".
Yesterday, we headed to the beach where we played in the waves, collected seashells and the kids played in the sand. The woman next to us was clearly not from this part of the world as she was feeding the seagulls on the beach! And I mean holding out pieces of her sandwich for them to take from her hand! Of course, she was also giggling and snapping photos of them so maybe she was just a tad cuckoo...
Checking out the swimwear stores and the beach fashion, it became clear that Speedos for men are also making a comeback - another unnecessary fashion repeat, if you ask me. Duncan agrees too as he commented that the look was ridiculous.
Today, back to Orlando we travelled, returned our rental car and began to catch up on laundry in preparation for another busy couple of days before our departure...I almost forgot to mention that today we nearly lost Duncan. We'd been driving on the Florida turnpike for nearly 3 hours at speeds of 120-130 km per hour and I suddenly noticed the open door light lit up on the dashboard. Understandably, I began to have as much of a freakout as I can safely have while driving on a major highway with loads of traffic and Robert looks around to discover that Duncan's door is now unlocked and slightly ajar. He is able to close it without us losing any toys, snacks, papers or, most importantly, people, but it caused a bit of a stir. Here's hoping we all return home in one piece this weekend!
