A Little of This, A Little of That

When you consider the population density of Metro Manila is 18,166 per square kilometre versus Canada's average of 3.7 people per square kilometre, it is really no wonder that it is as chaotic and hectic as it always appears.  Yesterday afternoon, upon our return from Palawan, we ended up on an impromptu tour of the city as we completed some errands.  We stumbled upon some fiestas, discovered some typically Filipino sights, and marveled, once again, at Vher's ability to navigate his way around a variety of neighbourhoods without getting lost or losing his patience in the insane traffic.

We have road hockey in Canada; they have road basketball in the Philippines

After our city tour, we met up with a second cousin of Robert's and her husband, Loraine and Dindo, for a fabulous dinner at a very funky restaurant, Cafe Juanita.  Following dinner, they took us to Fort Bonifacio for a walk; it is the latest hip, happening, trendy spot in Manila, full of restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and green space.

Today, we had a lazy, relaxing day.  We stayed in our pajamas until after lunch and then hung out outside for a bit, went to the grocery store, and Robert cooked dinner for the family tonight.  He made bulgogi beef (Korean beef barbecue); it was yummy!  Speaking of food, and since Vher made fishcakes at lunch that I ate without realizing they were fish, I thought now would be a good time to take a look at some of the new foods we've tried in the Philippines that I haven't talked about in previous posts.

 Duncan trying Halo-Halo

Me trying the cashew fruit (did any of you know there was a cashew fruit?)

 Me trying Otap

 Me trying Ube ice cream

Me having a guyabano shake (in English - soursop)

Chicken Lollipop, Banana Heart, kangkong, rice adobong, Sisig

Robert drinking coconut water

The Banana heart

Green mango salad with fried catfish

Kare-kare (oxtail in a peanut sauce), bagnet, pinakbet, Portugese fish

Lapu-lapu (okay, I didn't try this one and Robert's allergic - I thought it looked cool though)

 Special Cassava cake

Ube, Rocky Road, Strawberry and Keso (yes, cheese) ice cream

Danica loved the ice cream!  And Lola loves Danica, ice cream face and all...
